History:
Jamia Millia Islamia has a rich history and was founded in Aligarh on 29 October 1920 by prominent leaders including Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Zakir Hussain, with Mahmud Hasan Deobandi as its first president. The university's establishment was driven by the desire to create a national Muslim institution of higher learning that would offer progressive education and promote Indian nationalism. This initiative was sparked by the demand of some students at Aligarh Muslim University for a new National Muslim University that would be free from government influence and was perceived to have a pro-British stance.
Jamia Millia Islamia aimed to provide education that would foster a sense of patriotism and national integration among Indian Muslims while promoting a shared Indian culture. Mahatma Gandhi was a strong supporter of Jamia Millia Islamia and believed that it could shape the lives of students based on a common culture and worldview.
The university moved from Aligarh to Karol Bagh, New Delhi, in 1925. By 1935, it had established a campus in Okhla, a suburb of Delhi. In 1936, all university institutions, except Jamia Press, the Maktaba, and the library, were relocated to the new campus.
In 1962, the University Grants Commission granted Jamia Millia Islamia deemed university status. It was later accorded central university status through an act of the Indian Parliament on 26 December 1988.
In 2006, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia visited the university and donated US$2.90 million for the construction of a library, which is now known as Dr. Zakir Husain Library (Central Library).
In 2019, Jamia Millia Islamia gained prominence as a center of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The protests led to clashes between students and the police, resulting in injuries and sparking demonstrations in other universities as well.
