Initially, classes were conducted in rented rooms at Butler Palace and later moved to the Giri Institute of Developmental Studies. In 1992, a new campus was built on the outskirts of Lucknow, which is the current main campus of IIM Lucknow.
The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) was launched in the academic year 1985–86 with an inaugural batch of 30 students. Over the years, the institute has grown and expanded its academic offerings.
