A Transformational Milestone
Before 2018, IIM Bangalore, like its peer IIMs, awarded diplomas instead of degrees. This practice was rooted in the historical context of these institutions being set up as societies under the Societies Act, rather than as universities through an Act of Parliament. However, a landmark moment arrived in December 2017 when the Indian Institutes of Management Act was enacted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This pivotal legislation declared IIMs as "Institutes of National Importance." This recognition marked a significant turning point for IIM Bangalore and its counterparts.
Embracing Change and Progress
With this newfound status, IIM Bangalore took the lead in adopting the authority to award degrees to its students. In 2018, IIM Bangalore proudly became the first IIM to confer MBA degrees to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and subsequently to those of the Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP). These full-time MBA programs form the cornerstone of our commitment to delivering quality management education.

At Gateway to Education, we understand the significance of pursuing higher education at premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Here's an overview of the admission process for domestic candidates seeking entry into these esteemed institutions:
Domestic admissions to IIMs are primarily based on the Common Admission Test (CAT), a rigorous examination conducted by the IIMs in November every year at various centers across India. The CAT assesses candidates on their quantitative aptitude, data interpretation, verbal ability, and logical reasoning.
Candidates eligible for domestic admissions are Indian nationals or foreigners normally resident in India, capable of taking the CAT. It serves as the initial benchmark to identify potential candidates for further evaluation.
Shortlisted candidates move on to the next phase, where they undergo a comprehensive assessment. This includes a written test, personal interview, and the submission of two letters of reference from individuals closely acquainted with their academic or professional performance.
The final selection process at IIMs is a holistic evaluation considering multiple factors:
a. CAT Performance
The candidate's performance in the CAT serves as a crucial parameter in the selection process. A competitive score in the CAT is a key factor in advancing to subsequent stages.
b. Scholastic Achievement
Academic excellence is highly valued. The candidate's scholastic achievements, including academic records and relevant qualifications, play a significant role in the evaluation.
c. Work Experience
For candidates with work experience, the nature and duration of professional engagement are considered. Work experience adds depth to the candidate's profile and is taken into account during the selection process.
d. Writing Ability Test (WAT)
Candidates may be required to undergo a Writing Ability Test (WAT), evaluating their written communication skills and the ability to articulate ideas effectively.
e. Personal Interview
The personal interview is a crucial component, providing an opportunity for the panel to assess the candidate's interpersonal skills, leadership potential, and overall suitability for the program.
The final selection at IIMs is a culmination of the candidate's performance across all evaluation criteria. The CAT score, scholastic achievements, work experience, performance in the Writing Ability Test, and the personal interview collectively contribute to the decision-making process.
