History of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras):

In the mid-1950s, the West German Government extended a generous offer of technical assistance to establish a high-level engineering institute in India. This marked the beginning of a collaboration that would lead to the creation of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. The first Indo-German agreement for this ambitious endeavor was signed in Bonn, West Germany, in 1959, representing a significant milestone in the educational cooperation between the two nations.

IIT Madras owes its inception to the substantial technical, academic, and financial support from the Government of West Germany. At the time of its establishment, IIT Madras stood as the largest international educational project sponsored by the West German government. The Federal Republic of Germany committed to providing extensive assistance for the establishment of this higher technological institute, including a well-equipped workshop, laboratory facilities, and a library.

The German contribution amounted to ₹1.8 crore, which is equivalent to ₹166 crores or $20 million in 2023. Additionally, twenty German professors were enlisted to serve at the institute for a period of four to five years, accompanied by four German foremen who supervised the workshops for two years. The collaboration also facilitated the training of twenty Indian teachers in German institutions.

This initial collaboration laid the foundation for enduring connections between IIT Madras and various universities and institutions in Germany, resulting in collaborative research efforts over the years. While official support from the German government may have concluded, ongoing research initiatives, including those supported by the DAAD program and Humboldt Fellowships, continue to flourish.

IIT Madras commenced its academic journey in 1959 with the admission of the first batch of 120 students to the Engineering Course. The institute was officially inaugurated later that year by the Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. Over time, the institute's prominence grew, and in 1961, the IITs were officially declared as Institutes of National Importance.

The inaugural convocation ceremony took place on July 11, 1964, with Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the President of India at the time, delivering the convocation address and conferring degrees upon the first graduating batch of students. In a significant step towards inclusivity, IIT Madras welcomed its first women students in the B. Tech batch of 1966, reflecting a commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.

Campus

The main entrance of IIT Madras is located on Sardar Patel Road, flanked by the residential districts of Adyar and Velachery. The strategic location places the campus close to the Raj Bhavan, the official seat of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Additional entrances are situated in Velachery (near Anna Garden MTC bus stop, Velachery Main Road), Gandhi Road, and Taramani gate (proximate to Ascendas Tech Park).

The campus enjoys convenient accessibility, being 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Chennai Airport and 12 km (7.5 mi) from the Chennai Central Railway station. Various city buses connect the campus, and Kasturba Nagar serves as the nearest station on the Chennai MRTS line.

As part of this expansion initiative, education officials from India and Tanzania announced in July 2023 that an IIT Madras satellite campus would be set up in the Tanzanian autonomous territory of Zanzibar. This new campus is poised to commence classes in October 2023.

According to recent media reports, the placement drives for the academic year 2023-24 at IIT Madras saw the successful placement of 1,091 students across Phase I and Phase II. As of April 30, 2024, over 80% of BTech/Dual Degree students and 75% of Master’s degree students had secured positions.
