Historical Foundation of IIT Kharagpur:
Inception and Vision: The genesis of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II. In 1946, Sir Jogendra Singh, a Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, led a committee with the aim of establishing higher technical institutions for the post-war industrial development of India. This initiative gained momentum under the guidance of a 22-member committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar.
Recommendations and Inspiration: The Sarkar Committee, in its interim report, advocated for the creation of higher technical institutions in India, drawing inspiration from renowned international models like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Consulting with experts from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, the committee recommended the establishment of major institutions across the country.
Formation of IIT Kharagpur: In light of West Bengal's significant industrial presence, Bidhan Chandra Roy, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, successfully persuaded Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, to establish the inaugural institute in the state. Thus, in May 1950, the Eastern Higher Technical Institute was born. Initially located in Esplanade East, Calcutta, it later shifted to its permanent campus in Hijli, Kharagpur, 120 kilometres southwest of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
Historic Significance of Hijli: The choice of Hijli as the permanent campus holds historical significance. Formerly used as a detention camp during British rule, it housed Indian independence activists. This shift to Hijli marked the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology, laying the foundation for academic excellence.
