The College of Engineering Pune Technological University (COEP Tech) has a distinguished history dating back to July 1854. Originally established as The Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School, it was intended to provide specialized training for officers in the Public Works Department. Situated in Bhawani Peth, Pune, the original campus consisted of three small buildings for academic purposes and a separate residence for the Principal. By 1865, under the leadership of Principal Mr. Theodore Cooke, M.A., who served COEP for 28 years, the institution expanded significantly, with the foundation stone for new college buildings laid by Sir Bartle Frere, the then Governor of Bombay.
COEP Tech was initially affiliated with the University of Bombay in 1866, marking a new phase of structured higher education. In 1879, it expanded further to include agricultural and forest classes, becoming known as The College of Science. The institution has nurtured many illustrious engineers, including Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a pioneer in Indian civil infrastructure, in whose honor "Engineers Day" is celebrated nationally.
In 1911, the institution took on the name College of Engineering, Poona, offering Licentiate degrees in Civil Engineering (LCE), followed by degree programs in civil (1908), mechanical (1912), and electrical engineering (1932). Since then, COEP Tech has continued to expand its academic offerings, becoming a hub of engineering education in India.
In 2003, COEP Tech attained autonomous status, enabling it to establish its own curricula and manage finances independently—a landmark in COEP’s academic evolution. Today, COEP Tech offers a robust array of programs, including nine undergraduate and twenty-four postgraduate courses, with over 3,200 students enrolled. This autonomy has allowed the university to adapt to global engineering standards and foster a progressive learning environment.
