About the University of Lucknow

The idea of establishing a university in Lucknow was first proposed by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan of Mahmudabad through an article in The Pioneer, advocating for a center of higher learning in the region. The initiative gained momentum when Sir Harcourt Butler, then Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces, took a keen interest in educational advancements and championed the proposal.

Key Milestones

• November 10, 1919: A General Committee comprising educationists and stakeholders convened at Government House, Lucknow, to deliberate on the establishment of the university.
• March 1921: The University Court was constituted, and its first meeting was held on March 21, presided over by the Chancellor.
• July 17, 1921: The University began formal and informal teaching in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Medicine.
• July 1, 1922: The historic Canning College was officially handed over to the University, serving as the cornerstone for teaching and residence.
