NIT Meghalaya is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology, recognized as Institutions of National Importance by the Government of India. It was established in 2010 under the NIT Act, with funding and administrative oversight from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education).
The foundation stone for NIT Meghalaya’s permanent campus at Sohra (Cherrapunjee) was laid in October 2012 by Kapil Sibal, the then Union Minister for Information Technology and Human Resource Development. Initially, the institute operated at SVNIT Surat, serving as its mentor institution.
Campus
Currently, NIT Meghalaya operates from a temporary campus at the Bijni Complex in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, within the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) premises. However, the institute is developing its permanent campus in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), located in the East Khasi Hills district.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has been entrusted with the construction of the permanent campus, which aims to harmonize with the natural beauty of the surroundings. Phase I of construction is estimated to cost INR 300 crores and includes:
Academics
NIT Meghalaya admitted its first batch of B.Tech students in July 2010. These students completed the initial two years of their education at SVNIT Surat, with the institute shifting operations to Shillong by December 2012. The third batch of students began studies directly at the Shillong campus in July 2012.

The admission process is entrance-based, requiring candidates to qualify in national-level exams such as JEE Main, GATE, and IIT JAM, followed by counseling procedures conducted by JoSAA, CCMT, and CCMN, respectively. The institute also offers a Post-Doctoral Fellowship Scheme to foster advanced research.
