Collaboration with US Universities: The first decade of IIT Kanpur's journey was marked by collaboration with a consortium of nine prestigious US universities, including MIT, UCB, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, and others. This partnership, known as the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP), played a pivotal role in establishing the institute's research laboratories and academic programs. P. K. Kelkar, the first director of IIT Kanpur, led the institution through these formative years, and in 2002, the Central Library was renamed in his honor.

Pioneering Computer Science Education: Under the guidance of renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur made history by becoming the first institute in India to offer computer science education. The journey began in 1963 with the initiation of a computer course on an IBM 1620 system. Prof. H.K. Kesavan, chair of the Electrical Engineering department, played a crucial role, with support from Prof. Harry Huskey of the University of California, Berkeley. In 1971, IIT Kanpur launched an independent academic program in Computer Science and Engineering, offering M. Tech and PhD degrees.
