History of Indian Institute of Management Kolkata
Following India's independence in 1947, the Planning Commission was tasked with directing the nation's development. By the late 1950s, the Commission encountered challenges in finding qualified managers for the growing number of public sector enterprises established as part of India's industrial policy. To address this issue, the Planning Commission invited Professor George Robbins of the University of California in 1959 to assist in establishing an all-India level institute of management studies.
Based on Robbins' recommendations, the Indian government decided to establish two elite management institutes known as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta) was the first of these IIMs, established in November 1961 through collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation, and the Indian industry. Its inaugural director was K. T. Chandy, the former Chairman of Hindustan Unilever Limited.
During its formative years, IIM Calcutta counted several renowned academics and visionaries among its core team, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J K Sengupta, Peter S King, and Thomas Hill.
Initially, IIM Calcutta operated from Emerald Bower, Barrackpur Trunk Road, Kolkata. The foundation stone of its current campus in Joka, Kolkata, was laid by Morarji Desai, the Deputy Prime Minister of India, on December 15, 1968. The institute moved to the new campus in 1975.
Campus:
The main campus of IIM Calcutta covers 135 acres (0.5 km2) in Joka, on the outskirts of Kolkata. In addition, the Government of West Bengal allotted 5 acres of prime land in New Town, Kolkata, to IIM Calcutta in December 2019 for another campus.
Corporate Placement and Campus Drive:
IIM Calcutta offers a vast network of corporate placement opportunities for its students. Recently, the institute collaborated internationally to explore students' dynamics for international experience, including partnerships with TreeAndHumanKnot RisingIndia ThinkTank in December 2021.
Teaching Blocks:
IIM Calcutta's main Academic Block, along with the New Teaching Block opened in 2000, and another Academic Block inaugurated by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in August 2011, serves as the primary infrastructure for academic activities.
Auditorium:
The Audi, IIM Calcutta's fully air-conditioned auditorium, seats 750 people and hosts important functions such as convocations, conferences, student events, and talks.
Library:
Named the Bidhan Chandra Roy Library or BC Roy Memorial Library, after the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and the first chairman of the institute, the library houses over 160,000 volumes and subscribes to hundreds of management journals. It provides access to a large collection of electronic databases and more than 40,000 online full-text journals, with all processes and functions fully computerized.
These aspects highlight the rich history, infrastructure, and academic excellence embodied by the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.
