Originally established as Indraprastha University (IPU) by the Government of NCT Delhi, it was named after the ancient city of Indraprastha, a significant location in the epic Mahabharata. The university was officially renamed Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) in 2001, honoring the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh.
