Established: 1987, as the 17th Regional Engineering College (REC) in India.
Context: During Punjab's insurgency period (late 1970s-80s), the 2nd National Policy on Education (1986) emphasized removing disparities in education and promoting new institutions for social integration.
Vision: The REC model aimed to foster peace and unity by offering 50% of seats to students from other states, creating a “mini India” within its 153-acre campus in Jalandhar.

Deemed University Status: On October 17, 2002, REC Jalandhar was renamed National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar and taken over by the Central Government under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as a fully funded institute.
Institute of National Importance: In 2004, the MHRD declared NIT Jalandhar as an Institute of National Importance under the NITSER Act.
