History of NIT Trichy

NIT Trichy was established as part of a national initiative led by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to create institutions of excellence in science and technology. Originally established as REC Tiruchirappalli in 1964, it operated under the University of Madras before being affiliated with Bharathidasan University in 1982.
