The National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy) is a prestigious national research deemed university located near the city of Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 1964 as Regional Engineering College Tiruchirappalli (REC Tiruchirappalli), it was transformed into an NIT in 2003 and has since grown to become a leading institution in engineering, science, and technology.

NIT Trichy was established as part of a national initiative led by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to create institutions of excellence in science and technology. Originally established as REC Tiruchirappalli in 1964, it operated under the University of Madras before being affiliated with Bharathidasan University in 1982. In 2003, the institute became NIT Trichy, gaining full autonomy and the ability to confer degrees under its own name. In 2007, it was declared an Institution of National Importance.
