The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) was originally established as Manipal Engineering College (MEC) on 11 May 1957. The inauguration was presided over by S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister of Mysore. Roque Fernandes served as the first President of the college.
In its early phase, lectures were conducted at the Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal campus, until MIT’s own infrastructure was completed towards the end of 1957. The institute began with 25 faculty members and admitted 120 students annually to its undergraduate programs. The initial campus spanned 180 acres (0.73 km²), setting the foundation for MIT’s transformation into one of India’s premier technical education institutions.
