The Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna), abbreviated as IITP, is one of the 23 prestigious IITs in India. Located in Bihta, near Patna, Bihar, it is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. IIT Patna was established as part of the second generation of IITs through an Act of Parliament on 6 August 2008.
Since 2015, IIT Patna has operated from its permanent campus in Bihta, which lies approximately 30 kilometers west of Patna. Prior to this, the institute functioned temporarily from a smaller campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna.
Patna, historically known as Patliputra, has long been a renowned center of knowledge. It has attracted scholars from various parts of the world, including China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and Sri Lanka. This land has produced many visionaries, including Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Gobind Singh, Aryabhatta (the celebrated astronomer), and Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.
IIT Patna’s permanent campus is located on a 501-acre site at Amhara, Bihta. The foundation stone for the campus was laid in 2011 by Kapil Sibal, then Union Minister for Human Resource Development. The new campus began operations in July 2015, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 July 2015.
The initial operations of IIT Patna began at a temporary 10-acre facility in Pataliputra Colony, where renovated buildings of the Naveen Government Polytechnic served as classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices.
