Geographical Overview

Jammu's geography adds to its charm. The city is spread along the Tawi River, with the old city perched on the northern (right) bank, while newer neighborhoods extend along the southern (left) bank. Situated on the uneven ridges of the Shivalik Hills, Jammu has an average elevation of 327 meters. The city is bordered by the Shivalik range to the north, east, and southeast, while the Trikuta Range envelops it to the northwest.

Campus Development

In 2018, IIT Jammu transitioned its primary operations from a temporary campus in Paloura to its current main campus located in Jagti, Nagrota. The State Government of Jammu and Kashmir generously provided 400 acres of land for the establishment of this permanent campus, ensuring that the institute has adequate space for future expansion and development.

Temporary Campus

IIT Jammu initially operated from a temporary campus set up within the LCD campus. This facility spans a built-up area of 40,000 sq. ft. and includes essential amenities such as:

• A computer laboratory for practical learning
• Faculty offices for academic staff

Permanent Campus

In 2016, IIT Jammu began operations from its permanent campus, with the State Government providing 159 hectares of land for its establishment. The agreement for this land was signed by Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi, on behalf of the MHRD, and Shri Hemant Sharma, Secretary to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir's Higher Education Department.

• The transit campus, located on 25 acres of the permanent campus site, was constructed simultaneously and became operational in August 2017, coinciding with the commencement of the 2017-18 academic session. The transit campus includes a built-up area of approximately 200,000 sq. ft. and provides accommodation for 650 students.
